Follow our journey to understand and protect whales along this magnificent coastline

Cetacealab is located on the southern end of Gil Island. Our location is unique as we monitor the acoustic habitat of both orca and humpback whale populations in an area so remote that during the winter season, months may pass before we see another person. We are the only residents of Gil Island and Cetacealab the only facility.

This facility was built using mainly driftwood from the beach, an alaskan mill and a determined group of friends! To generate power we installed a micro-hydro plant in a near by creek. This system provides power for all the lab equipment and personal use. With satellite internet we have access to email, contact with other researchers and an endless library of resources.
